In 2018, Star Wars: Republic Commando was made available on Xbox One through the platform’s backward compatibility program. The re-release of the game will become available on the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch consoles come April 6, 2021, for a price of $15. Star Wars: Republic Commando was celebrated at release by critics, citing great storytelling and fun combat. Fans of the Star Wars franchise also consider this game as one of the best Star Wars games ever made. Aspyr, a studio known for porting several prior Star War titles, is handling the PlayStation and Switch ports of this game. Part of its porting portfolio is the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch ports of Star Wars: Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast in 2019, Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy in 2020, and Star Wars Episode I: Racer also in 2020. Aspyr promises modernized controls for this Republic Commando port. Unfortunately, this re-release will not include the original’s multiplayer aspect. Star Wars: Republic Commando puts players in the shoes of the leader of an elite group of clone troopers called Delta Squad during the Clone Wars. The voice actor of the lead character, Temuera Morrison, played Jango Fett in the prequel Star Wars trilogy. It was not announced if this version of the game will also find its way on PC. Currently, the 2005 version of the game is available on Steam. Rob Smith in his book “Rogue Leaders: The Story of LucasArts” detailed the plan for the sequel of this game but it was canned and never got out of the concept art phase in early development. The sequel, titled “Star Wars: Imperial Commando”, would have been based on the betrayal of Republic soldiers. It would be impossible for a sequel now since the events in the Republic Commando are “de-canonized” from the Star Wars universe. Although interestingly, the Delta Squad was retained in the official canon of the Star Wars universe.
