No Way Home sets a high bar for future Spider-Man movies
No Way Home was easily the biggest highlight of 2021 in all of cinema. The promise of the MCU finally exploring the multiverse on the big screen and the return of fan-favorites like Alfred Molina’s Otto Octavius and Willem Dafoe’s Norman Osborne, among several others, was more than enough to get moviegoers inside theaters, which is exactly what happened. Just as the theaters closed the past weekend, the earlier reports had No Way Home at third on the all-time opening weekend with $253 million in tow. But, according to Sony (via The Hollywood Reporter), the final numbers are slightly higher than initially believed. Although it’s not by much, Sony confirmed that No Way Home earned $260 million at the domestic box office. This means that the final chapter in Tom Holland’s initial Peter Parker trilogy now has the third-highest opening weekend of all time, just below Endgame and ahead of 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War at $257 million. No Way Home’s numbers give it the biggest opening for any Spider-Man movie and in all of Sony’s cinematic history as well as for all December releases. We’re curious to find out how No Way Home will do in the coming weeks and other territories. No Way Home already beat the odds by releasing amidst the threat of the Omicron variant of the COVID-19 virus. Audiences won’t pass up the chance to see Spider-Man swing into action in theaters after all this time. However, most superhero movies tend to suffer from a rapid decline at the box office on succeeding weekends, which isn’t good news for Sony and Disney if they want No Way Home to become the first and only Hollywood film to breach the $1 billion mark during the COVID-19 pandemic. The good news here is that with $600.8 million at the global box office for its opening weekend, No Way Home only needs a fraction of its opening’s success to become the 10th MCU film to make more than $1 billion at the global box office. In the meantime, the fans who have already watched No Way Home can look forward to several other upcoming MCU films and shows. Next up for the MCU on the big screen is Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which will premiere on May 6, 2022.
