After it was first revealed way back in E3 2019, not a single trailer released since has managed to fully explain the game. This includes the latest trailer that was showcased at the February 2021 State of Play event, titled Déjà Vu. Apparently, even Arkane Studios knows this, which is why they’ve decided to release a new trailer.
New Deathloop Trailer Explains What Deathloop Is
In the appropriately named trailer, Dinga Bakaba, the game’s director, decided to help shed some light and make Deathloop less confusing. Bakaba explains that the game is a “murder puzzle where you play an assassin trapped in a time loop”. He even uses a wide range of outfits and props to help drive home the point and make everything revolving around Deathloop even easier to explain. For those that didn’t watch the video, let us help you out. Deathloop is basically a game where you wake up on Black Reef every day and all the characters, as well as NPCs, are part of the loop. This means that everyone comes back to life at the end of the day. As such, it’s up to you, the player to find the most efficient way to kill as many targets as possible before the day is finished. This is fairly similar to The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, sans the deadline. In Deathloop, players have plenty of freedom and time in terms of how they want to approach the goal of the game, which is to eliminate all eight targets in a single day. Combat-wise, Deathloop should feel familiar for gamers who have already played Dishonored. They can upgrade their weapons and cosmic powers in Deathloop and even if the day ends, all upgrades you’ve made all throughout will carry over. More importantly, the more days have passed in the game, the more you’ll be able to predict the movement of each target. Just be careful though. Deathloop has a mechanic that discourages players from observing their targets and making themselves overpowered by spending days in the game. As already confirmed in the game’s original announcement, players will find themselves constantly hunted by a rival assassin. This mechanic also carries over to the multiplayer feature of the game where other gamers can take control of Juliana and add a layer of difficulty to the already-difficult game as they chase you around. With that said, Deathloop definitely is looking like it deserves to be one of the most highly anticipated PS5 exclusives to release in 2021.
